Trauma therapy that actually works
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, or EMDR, is a research-backed trauma therapy that uses a combination of bilateral stimulation (such as handheld buzzers that pulse at random times) alongside targeted memory reprocessing.
Why work with EMDRIA-certified EMDR Therapists?
We’ve taken the time in our careers to develop a deeper understanding of trauma and how trauma therapy works, including attaining EMDRIA certification, so we can provide EMDR therapy with integrity.
This additional certification builds on the basic EMDR training through a vetted, evidence-based program of study aligned with best professional practices.
We put our patients first, which has led us to prioritize the learning and experiential work needed to deliver EMDR therapy as effectively and safely as possible.
EMDR helps your mind to work through traumatic experiences and associations, so you can get “unstuck,” from the trauma cycle and intentionally reframe negative beliefs with present-day personal truths.
How does EMDR work?
After the history–taking and planning done in your first session, you’ll continue the EMDR process, including:
Assessment: You'll identify the negative beliefs you've associated with your target memory and rate the memory's distress level.
Desensitization: You'll focus on the memory while using bilateral stimulation and notice what thoughts and associations come to mind.
Installation: You'll focus on the memory and a true, positive belief at the same time, rewiring your associations with the memory.
Body scan: You'll examine how you feel throughout your body to see if you're still holding on to any sensations from the memory.
Closure: You and your therapist will work on grounding and returning to a sense of calm.
Reevaluation: Next session, you'll see where your distress level is for the memory after the EMDR process.

Therapy that incorporates faith
Faith and spirituality are an integral part of many people’s lives, and we have found it beneficial to welcome spirituality into the therapy room as part of trauma therapy.
Trauma often creates deeply entrenched beliefs and behaviors that keep you stuck in moments of pain and fear.
There are faith-based values and principles, such as connection to others, and openness to change, that can help people turn away from the negative self-beliefs of trauma, and toward personal truths that uplift you and help you heal.
Trauma therapy that can help those dealing with problem drinking
At St John Counseling, our experience with patients managing problem drinking or problem drug use has shown us that many such patients are also carrying a lot of unprocessed trauma.
Trauma therapy can help reduce the severity of triggers, release emotional pain, and help those dealing with addiction to find hope after years of struggle.
As experienced therapists, we know that a strong support system can be a lifeline for those dealing with problem drinking, and we would be honored to serve as therapists on your care team.

We currently accept Medicare, UHC, Cigna, Aetna & Humana.
We also provide therapy for patients on a self-pay basis.

For many people, talk therapy is insufficient to fully process traumatic experiences. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, or EMDR, can help you process and unpack trauma, even when other therapy approaches have fallen short.
We are EMDRIA-certified EMDR therapists. We provide EMDR therapy that adheres to the highest standards of both excellence and integrity.
We can also incorporate components from many other therapy modalities to support your healing through EMDR, meaning you’ll have access to trauma therapy that is both effective and personalized.
-
For your first session, your therapist will explain the EMDR process, answer any questions you have, and ask you thoughtful questions to learn more about your life history and background.
You and your therapist will choose one or more target memories to use in the EMDR process.
You’ll also learn emotional safety and grounding exercises to use throughout the EMDR process and between sessions. We know that trauma therapy can be intense. We use an EMDR approach that prioritizes emotional safety and efficacy, and prevents retraumatization.

No, this is not a problem. Our faith and the values it instills in us are a big part of why we became therapists.
We work with people from all walks of life, we know that faith and spirituality are very personal, and specific faith practices are not a requirement for therapy at St John Counseling.
We find that faith principles like connection, helping others, honesty and accountability, and being open to positive change are supportive in the therapy room.
We have also found that, regardless of a patient’s personal beliefs, they find something meaningful and helpful in this approach.
